Caitlin Walker's book is about using Clean Language and Systemic Modelling to encourage the conditions for collaboration.

Caitlin was born in Nigeria, with an American mother and a British father. By the time she was 9 years old she’d lived in three continents and had had to learn three very different ways of being in the world.

As a young adult, Caitlin went on to study anthropology and linguistics to uncover how people shared rules, created norms and negotiated living together.

When she met David Grove and discovered that Clean Language was a process for enquiring into other people’s unconscious rules and experiences, she decided to leave her studies and to focus on how to use Clean Language with groups. She found that using Clean Language promoted self-awareness and an acceptance of others. She used it to help diverse individuals develop the skills needed to create shared goals and work more effectively together to achieve them.

This book is the story of how she brought this approach to difficult teenagers, the long term unemployed, business managers, lecturers and then to whole organisations. It tells how she moved from facilitating groups to supporting groups to become self-facilitating and creating the conditions required for systemic, sustainable change. It tells stories of when the approach worked well and when it really didn’t. Along the way you will discover the skills and philosophy behind the approach so you can begin applying Systemic Modelling in your own practice.

Reviews

"The way that you itegrate your personal journey with your learnings and teachings, and in a stage by stage fashion andding components of the process you have developed, with evidences and transcriptions is seamless."
Antony Sammerof

"This is a simply brilliant book. If you work with other people in any capacity, do get hold of a copy now - and don’t just read it, enjoy it and learn from it, but act on it. If you are a trainer, coach, educator or business person you will benefit from this book, just as you will if you are a psychotherapist, psychologist, counsellor, politician, parent or student. The reason I recommend it so highly and without reservation for anyone who wants to learn more about themselves and others is that it is not simply about skills, techniques and processes (though it has those in abundance), but it is about our attitudes to learning.* The author herself models curiosity, attentiveness, courage and invention. You will identify these qualities in yourself and be encouraged to develop them further. Caitlin writes openly and movingly about her own experience. Go with her. Trust her. Her account is eminently readable and inspiring. You will learn not only about working with groups and individuals, but also about working with yourself, I promise!"
Philip Harland Author of "The Power of Six" and "Trust Me, I'm The Patient"

"This book is a must read – if you are interested in or already working with groups & teams to facilitate change or a reach a specific outcome. Caitlin’s process is so flexible that it works in extremely diverse areas; from groups of disaffected young people to software programmers, in education & in business, from charities to the international community. Caitlin’s belief is that the answers are in the system in which we operate and that we inspire capability in ourselves. Her approach is unlike anything else you will have come across and this book is an insight into Caitlin’s work and how she developed Systemic Modelling ®, the name for her process for supporting groups to find sustainable solutions."

"This book takes a courageous step towards filling the gap between a conceptual understanding of how metaphors shape our thinking and experience, and an applied approach for eliciting metaphors in practice. The examples illustrate how fundamental metaphorical thinking is to our experience, and how this thinking can be made explicit and used to accomplish individual and systemic change. "
Loizos Heracleous Professor of Strategy and Organisation, Warwick Business School

"Caitlin Walker has written a remarkably valuable guide for anyone interested in how the metaphors of our daily life can amplify our group and organizational capacities. The key to unlocking our obstacles and our ‘stuck processes’ is not in more rational-analytic deliberation or command-control responses – but is here in the room with you right now. If we wish to foster effective teamwork, to reduce stress, and increase organizational engagement and productivity – the answer is in the simple, repeatable processes outlined in Systemic Modelling. Caitlin writes warmly about her own journey of discovery, and has an eye for subtle insights into the big picture and a knack for putting it across clearly. Here is fresh thinking about the application of David Grove’s Clean Language to groups, and more. Written with simplicity and clarity, it is heavy with wise practicality. You simply can not afford to not know about this if you wish to become a more effective group leader, manager, parent, project manager or executive."
